Background of the Study
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health concern affecting women after childbirth, with potentially devastating effects on both maternal and infant well-being. The prevalence of PPD in Nigeria, including Kaduna State, is alarmingly high, contributing to maternal morbidity, infant developmental delays, and poor family dynamics. Traditionally, mental health issues like PPD have been underreported and under-addressed, especially in low-resource settings.
Nurse-led counseling interventions have emerged as a promising approach to managing postpartum depression. Nurses, who are often the first point of contact for new mothers, are in a unique position to provide early identification and counseling to prevent or mitigate PPD. Such interventions focus on psychological support, education, and referral for further mental health treatment when necessary. This study aims to evaluate the impact of nurse-led counseling on reducing the incidence and severity of postpartum depression among women in Kaduna State.
Statement of the Problem
Postpartum depression is a widespread yet often neglected issue in Kaduna State, affecting mothers' mental health, their caregiving abilities, and the overall family environment. While mental health professionals play a key role in managing PPD, nurses, particularly those in maternal and child health settings, could play a more active role. However, the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in managing postpartum depression remains poorly explored in this region. This research seeks to examine the impact of such interventions and highlight their potential to improve maternal mental health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in reducing the severity of postpartum depression among women in Kaduna State.
2. To examine the role of nurse-led counseling in improving maternal-infant bonding and caregiving.
3. To explore the challenges faced by nurses in providing postpartum depression counseling in Kaduna State.
Research Questions
1. How effective is nurse-led counseling in reducing postpartum depression among women in Kaduna State?
2. What is the impact of nurse-led counseling on maternal-infant bonding and caregiving in Kaduna State?
3. What are the challenges faced by nurses in delivering postpartum depression counseling in Kaduna State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led counseling significantly reduces the severity of postpartum depression among women in Kaduna State.
2. Nurse-led counseling improves maternal-infant bonding and caregiving practices in Kaduna State.
3. Lack of adequate training and resources limits the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in postpartum depression management in Kaduna State.
